Ingredients: Cake: Margarine, caster sugar, self-raising flour, eggs, baking powder. Filling: Unsalted butter, icing sugar, jam. Decoration: Roll out icing, icing sugar, egg white (made from powder) food colouring. May contain traces of nuts.
I love making cakes. And I love the way that almost every memory of every birthday, wedding, anniversary or Christmas has a cake involved somewhere along the line. Cakes are symbolic of celebration. And mothers are central to these celebrations, making the cake, planning, organising, and cooking. Cooly, calmy, smiling, quietly.
Yet sometimes as mums our emotions are so intense, so raw, like nothing we’ve ever felt before. The job is so big that it seems overwhelming. It’s all bubbling under the surface and impossible to keep it in. So it seeps out…in a pale pink, delicate yet ultimately untimely whisper.
